HoboEye Art:
Mike Stone, Livingston, Montana
Mike Stone employs the technique and medium of tempera in much of his work, including this series. Also called egg tempera, it is an ancient technique widely employed in the Byantine empire and throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. It is a form of paint made through binding pigment in an egg medium. As a technique, tempera lost favor among painters with the rise of oil painting.
Tempera is a relative of encaustic, the ancient painting technique employing melted wax. More recently, encaustic was a favored technique of Jasper Johns.
Both forms were widely used in religious painting and religious iconography during their early employment. So Mr. Stone’s employment of tempera in these light-hearted images gives more than a hint toward his wit. |
