Frank Herholdt, London
Frank Herholdt was born in Cape Town, South Africa and grew up in Johannesburg. He studied briefly at Johannesburg School of Art before working as an assistant to a local photographer.
He moved to London in the early 80’s. After taking on small assignments for a few years he eventually met Art Kane and assisted him whenever he was on assignment in Europe. This relationship was to become a profound influence on Frank’s future. Art’s uncompromising attitude towards his work and his unique vision remained with Frank who went on to build a successful career as an advertising photographer in London and the rest of the world. He became heavily influenced by clasic cinema, and used cimematic ligting techniques to acheive drama and atmosphere. Frank also became heavily involved in digital retouching from the very beginning and used a combination of locations, sets and digital manipulation to realise his ideas.
Recently Frank has been doing more personal work, exploring more subtle sides of his photography, working mainly on exterior locations. A lot of later work is dominated by a natural approach, moving away from manipulation and heavy post production, though his emphasis on lighting remains.
He lives and works from a converted pub in East London, with his partner and baby son Zach.
